Opalite is an artificial opalescent glass produced in China. It is produced in sheets and used exclusively as a raw material for decorative products such as carvings, decorative stones and jewellery.

It is composed of minerals such as dolomite and metal, fused together at very high temperatures to replicate the volcanic environment in which natural opal is formed.

Opalite was first produced in Venice in the 16th century as a substitute for natural opal. The surface of the stone contains particles of silica, which create the same rainbow effect as natural opal.

It can be produced in a wide range of colours, but currently translucent blue is the most popular pigment. This stone is said to represent purity and is believed to be particularly good at attracting positive energy.

Also known as "Opal Glass" as it is not technically a gemstone or mineral rock.
