Ginger essential oil is extracted from the plant Zingiberaceae officinale, also known as common or yam ginger. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the unpeeled or dried, ground roots of the plant. It is a warming oil, particularly good for digestion and effective against nausea and vomiting.
Ginger oil has many therapeutic properties. It is used to relieve the pain of cracks, arthritis and carbuncles. It helps to combat hangovers, musculoskeletal disorders, colds, flu, coughs, sinusitis, sore throats, skin aches, diarrhoea, colitis, cramps, chills and fever. Used in a vaporizer, this oil fights sadness and depression and is a great aphrodisiac thanks to its energizing properties. Drip a drop of oil on a handkerchief and inhale to treat symptoms of nausea and colds.
Ginger is native to India, China and Java, but is also found in Africa. The ancient Sanskrit and Chinese texts also mention the use of ginger as a medicine. It is also mentioned in ancient Greek, Roman and Arabic literature. Dried ginger was used to cure stomach ache, diarrhoea, throat problems and nausea.
