Latin name: Amyris Balsamifera
Used parts of the plant: wood and twigs
Place of origin: Haiti
Extraction method: steam distillation
Amyris essential oil is also called West Indian sandalwood oil because its scent is reminiscent of sandalwood. It is extracted from the bark and branches of the amyris balsamifera tree by steam distillation. The tree has a very high oil content and therefore burns like a candle. It is also known locally as the candle tree. It is a cheaper alternative to pure sandalwood.
This oil is used to clean wounds and to treat flu and diarrhoea. Many people find it very effective in relieving cystitis and vaginal infections. When used in a vaporizer, it relieves anxiety, emotional tension and insomnia, and acts as an aphrodisiac. It is also used to treat coughs, colds and bronchitis. Its calming properties help during meditation and it also has a muscle relaxant effect.
Until 1886, the tree used as the basis for the oil was not known and was thought to be a classic sandalwood, but microscopic examination of the leaves has shown that it is a different species. The Amyris Balsamifera tree still grows wild in Haiti. It is considered a treasure by the indigenous people for its healing properties.
Professional Essential Oils are available in special packaging, mainly for aromatherapists and for users who use them in larger quantities.
