Frankincense essential oil is steam distilled from the resin of the Boswellia carterii tree of the Burseraceae family and is also known as Olibanum. The word comes from the French franc meaning luxurious and is the first known and used as a fragrance resin, along with myrrh. The tree is native to the Middle East, where it grows in a bonsai form. Incense is believed by many to symbolise divinity.
This oil is very popular in aromatherapy for its soothing properties. It helps heal wounds and prevents scars from forming. It tones the complexion, removes wrinkles and is used in cosmetic products to prevent stretch marks. Frankincense essential oil is used to relieve anxiety, stress, asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis and coughs. It is generally good for the uterus and eases heavy menstruation. It is also useful during meditation. Use during pregnancy is not recommended.
Ancient Egyptians burned incense as a sacred incense and also used it as a face mask. Burnt resin is called kohl and was used by the Egyptians to highlight the eye. Incense was once used to ward off evil spirits.
