Peppermint essential oil is claimed to be good for ailments such as asthma, colic, fever, bloating, headache, nausea and dizziness. This oil is said to be excellent for treating mental fatigue and depression, refreshing and stimulating due to its menthol content. Good for the skin, it is used in creams to treat sunburn, itching or dermatitis. It helps to combat bad breath and gum infections, and is often added to mouthwashes. Its aromatic formulation not only has a therapeutic effect but also repels mosquitoes and other insects.
Peppermint is native to Mediterranean countries, but is now cultivated in many parts of Europe, America and Asia. It has been used since ancient times in Greece and Rome, among other places. According to Greek myth, a nymph named Mentha was turned into a mint plant in revenge by his lover's wife Persephone. According to Pliny, peppermint was used by the Greeks and Romans to crown their children during festivals. In the last few centuries it has been used as a medicine in England.
