Fennel essential oil is obtained from the plant Foeniculum Vulgare, extracted from the crushed seeds by steam distillation. The oil, like the seed, is good for digestion as well as for many other ailments. It is used in aromatherapy to treat oily skin, wrinkles and excess weight. The aroma of the oil is said to enhance courage, determination and strength.

This oil is a popular remedy for digestive problems such as bloating, constipation, colic, nausea and vomiting. Fennel oil is said to tone the spleen and liver. It has a cleansing effect on the skin and helps heal bruises. Please note that this oil should not be used in large doses and should be avoided completely during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as in people suffering from breast cancer and epilepsy.

The word fennel comes from the Latin foenum, meaning 'hay'. In the Middle Ages it was known as Fenkle. It was a commonly used and very popular herb in ancient Chinese, Egyptian and Roman cultures, fennel was believed to prolong life and increase courage and strength. It was also believed to ward off evil spirits. Fennel was also used to strengthen eyesight, cure snake bites and relieve colic. In India, plain, roasted or mint-flavoured fennel seeds, known as 'saunf', are served after meals to aid digestion.
