Clove oil is usually produced by steam distillation from the leaves, stems and buds of the tree Eugenia caryophyllata, native to Indonesia and the Malacca Islands. It is a strong oil, with a warm, spicy fragrance, highly diluted and should be used very carefully in aromatherapy.
Clove essential oil can be used to heal or soothe acne, bruises, cuts and burns, leg ulcers, and as a rheumatism and arthritis reliever. It is also thought by many to be good for the digestive system, relieving vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, cramps and overcoming parasites. It is valuable in reducing symptoms of respiratory problems such as bronchitis, asthma and tuberculosis. In aromatherapy, it removes mental fatigue and tiredness and helps with insomnia, and also acts as an aphrodisiac.
Cloves have been used in ancient India and China. Ancient Chinese medicine used cloves to treat indigestion, diarrhoea, hernia and fungal infections. It was also used to treat mouth ulcers, toothache and as a breath freshener. Cloves were one of the first commercially available spices. It is said to have been brought to Europe by Arab traders during the Roman Empire.
Professional Essential Oils are available in specialised packaging, mainly for aromatherapists, or for users who use them in larger quantities.
