Latin name: Citrus Nobilis
Used part of plant: fruit peel
Place of origin: Argentina
Extraction method: cold pressing
Mandarin essential oil is extracted from Citrus reticulata by cold pressing the peel. The oil has a golden-yellow-orange colour and a characteristic fresh mandarin aroma.
This oil is very gentle and is said to be suitable for use in children and pregnant women.
It has a tonic and stimulating effect on the stomach as well as the liver and is useful in the treatment of digestive problems. Mandarin oil can also be used to treat acne, oily skin and blemishes. The oil, diluted in a carrier oil of about 1-2%, is gently massaged on the child's abdomen to relieve abdominal pain. A few drops in the bath will soothe hyperactive children. Used in an oil burner, it will dispel depression and relieve anxiety.
This fruit was traditionally given as a gift to Chinese mandarins, hence the name. Originating in southern China and the Far East, mandarin oranges were brought to Europe in 1805 and to America in 1845. In France, mandarins are considered a safe medicine for treating digestive disorders in children and the elderly, as they help the digestive system and liver function.
