Sage essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowering upper parts and leaves of Salvia sclarea. The plant originated in southern Europe and is now cultivated in France and Russia because of the oil it yields. The greatest benefit of this oil is its calming effect on the nerves and it is particularly useful for female complaints and ailments. It helps relieve skin problems such as acne, inflammation and ulcers.
Sage is useful for those who suffer from depression, stress and insomnia. Its use is recommended for painful or irregular masturbation. It relieves the symptoms of menopause such as hot flushes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, headaches and dizziness.
It is also good for digestion and kidneys. It is recommended to use only in small amounts as larger doses can cause flatulence.
In the Middle Ages, this oil was called the eye of Christ, Oculus Christi, for its healing properties, which have been highly valued ever since. It is used in aromatherapy and naturopathy in many parts of the world, for example, in Jamaica to clean and cool ulcers and to treat eye inflammation.
