Frankincense essential oil is steam distilled from the resin of the Boswellia carterii tree of the Burseraceae family and is also known as Olibanum. The word comes from the French franc meaning "luxurious", frankincense being the first resin used for perfuming along with myrrh. The tree is native to the Middle East, growing as a natural bonsai here. Frankincense is considered a symbol of divinity.
This oil is very popular in aromatherapy for its soothing properties. It helps heal wounds and prevents scars from forming. It is also used to tone facial skin, remove wrinkles and prevent stretch marks. In vaporizer, it is used to relieve anxiety, stress, asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis and bad cough. It is a great aid for meditation. Use during pregnancy is not recommended.
Ancient Egyptians burned frankincense in religious ceremonies in the form of incense. The resin left over after burning, called kohl, was ground into powder and used to paint and accentuate their eyes. This is clearly visible in preserved ancient Egyptian paintings. The earliest records of the use of incense burners are found on the tombs of the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut, dating from the 15th century BC. Frankincense was also used to ward off evil spirits.
